Cheap & Reasonably Effective Gutter Guard for DIY Installation

There is no consistent gutter shape and size, nor uniform shingle termination method or installation. It''s however your roofing subcontractor built it. In other words, you have to improvise and forget about getting the perfect product as gutter guard. I researched so many products and options before I gave up months ago. Unless the guard came installed with the gutter by the same tradesman, there will never be a perfect match. I wasn''t going to spend $60, $80 or well over $100 for something that may or may not work. Today, I just installed 40'' of the guard on my garage for less than $12.00.

Thermwell VX620 showed up one day as a Prime Add-On item at such a ridiculously low price, I figure, what''s the worst that can happen? Just for research purposes, I also bought the same (6"x20'') but 3 times more expensive Amerimax 6x20 guard just to compare; it looks, feels exactly the same, so don''t bother, that one is probably identical just labeled & marketed differently. The flexible vinyl diamond grid guard doesn''t sit perfectly, or arc uniformly, but I was able to snag it friction fit between the gutter''s outer returned lip and tug the other edge under the cedar shakes'' slight overhang over the bent vertical run of the metal flashing underneath, with a slight concave bulge over my 5" aluminum gutter. It doesn''t look bad from above; from below, you can''t see a thing.

Unfortunately, my garage is 20'' long, the gutter extends just a few inches past 20'', so there is about a 6" gap right near where the downspouts is. I figure I''ll go find some screen bulb and stick it right there to close off that last gap. To be sure I have some mechanical anchorage on the guard , I bought a bag of 8 gutter guard girders, which I have problem snapping onto the eave flashing or my gutter lip as intended, instead, they are also friction snag on the shingle termination edge, so I suspect it''s possible that the installation could be blown off on a gusty windy day. We shall see. As make shift as my installation seems, it was easy to install, can be easily removed in the future without damage to the gutter, and sure is better than what I had before, which is nothing!

After much googling, asking neighbors, etc it seems there may be no great/perfect solutions to the leaves in gutter thing.... At least none that aren''t crazy expensive. So years ago, before my house was sided & new gutters installed, I used this & it worked well. It fit my old gutter perfectly, spanned from an outer lip in the gutter to underneath a line of roofing. We''ve no pines but do have oaks & maples with those little spinning seeds. This stuff kept [MOST OF IT*] out of the gutters & when it dried seemed to blow away [EXCEPT some seeds*].

This stuff did not fit as well with my new white gutters but I came up with a nice solution... Tucking in its outer edge into "1-1/2 in. White Vinyl Finish Trim" from HD, tucking the inner edge under roofing and screwing the white trim into every other gutter runner (see pics). This is working well so far, looks good & expect it will continue to work well. Very low price per foot too.

* Post-Maple-spinning-seeds update: So after the large Maple towering over the corner of our house finished dropping its spinning seeds I did have to remove a cantaloupe-sized mound of seeds from a corner downspout. No biggie, just pulled back a foot or so of the mesh & bagged the seeds. Will install one of those $2 downspout guard/strainers & plan on cleaning it once or twice a year.

I had trouble initially installing the mesh because the edges catch on everything and would not slide under the shingles. Then I tried another technique that worked beautifully. I bought a bundle of plastic shims used for installing doors (wood shims might also work) and slid one under the shingles first every 6-8". The mesh was then easy to slide on top of the shims and under the shingles. I cut the mesh into 5-foot lengths to make it easy to handle. Overlap the ends 1-2" and use small zip ties to fasten them together. The only drawback I can see is they may not stand up to heavy snow or ice and sag into the gutter. Not a problem where I live. If this is a problem you could install long screws or supports first every 6" along the gutter. Some company even sells supports designed for this ("gutter guard girders"). It is easy to blow the small debris out using a hose nozzle or a leaf blower (on low speed). Another trick: before installing, unroll and reverse roll the mesh for a day or so to take out the curve in the mesh.

I installed a 40 foot “test section” of this gutter guard yesterday to see how it works before I take the plunge for the rest of the house.
I reverse-rolled it for a day or two to flatten it a bit. Maybe that helped. The hard part is getting started with it on the gutter - once I was able to get a few feet in place it went ok. Maybe that is typical, or maybe it was just me having to figure out how best to do it.
I bought a 4-inch putty knife to loosen the shingles from the drip edge in order to slip on edge underneath. That works ok. You can also use the screwdriver to stick through the mesh as need to pull it out flat if it gets punched into the gutter
I would recommend just loosening a long stretch before you begin rather than doing a couple of feet at a time. I found as I went along that an 8-inch flat screwdriver worked just as well. And I could also use it to help push or pull the mesh underneath the shingles to the right depth. I placed the near edge under the lip of the gutter as I worked.
My installation ended up relatively flat as the picture shows. I think any leaves will wash on off or at most hang up on the far edge where they can be removed if a problem.
Here I South Florida my oaks tend to drop leaves a little all the time, and if there is a big drop it is in late winter, but we don’t have snow and ice to interfere with this product. Since it is not screwed in I wonder how it will hold up in a hurricane.
I will try to update this in a few monhs.

Original Review

Summary:
- I don''t think there is really a 5" version available from this page
- Either the material has changed or there are two products being delivered from this page (one stiffer, larger opening; the other more flexible, smaller mesh). I much prefer the stiffer version.
- It''s really cheap compared to a permanent / real gutter helmet products, so still much better than nothing

Details:
Last August I ordered a roll of 6" when they were really cheap ($2) to try it out. I tried it and was impressed so in December I ordered 4 more and was again pleased with how easily it installed and stood firm in my gutters. I don''t have it attached in any way other than the springiness of the material held by friction within the gutter. About a month ago we had a day of very high winds and I expected to see sections blown 3 houses away, but none of them budged. I had one more section of gutter with a bit more shingle overhang so I ordered the 5" version last week to finish off the last gutter. Here''s where things go sideways...

I received a 6" roll which was probably a good thing since the material now seems much thinner / narrower gauge so less "spring" to hold in the gutter, and mesh is finer (more openings per square unit). I installed it just like I did the other rolls but it clearly lacks the built in resistance to flex that is holding the other sections tight. It just sort of lies there. I will wait and see but I wouldn''t be surprised it comes out in a good gust and I''ll need to secure it somehow. I can''t say for sure what the model number was on what I previously ordered, but my history says it was VX620 the same as this. It was for sure a Frost King brand.

See photos that show the difference in the mesh and how it lays, and the label from my most recent purchase.

Hopefully sellers can clarify which version of the product they are selling so if you want the rigid version or the floppy version you''ll get what you want.

UPDATE 9/2019
There are sections of this that have been up for nearly 3 years and haven''t moved. We recently had a huge storm that tore down trees and buckets of rain but all gutter mesh stayed put. I''ve been checking my gutters with a cheap drone instead of getting out the big ladder and haven''t been up to the highest part since installation. After the big storm I went up to look things over and the larger opening mesh was standing tall and clean but the finer mesh style was sagging and starting to get clogged. I attempted to remove it to clean and reinstall but it was rotted and tore apart.

Still keeping the review as 4 stars but again there is a big difference between the larger mesh opening and smaller mesh opening materials. I''m going to look for the good stuff at the local hardware.

The material really needs to be more rigid to install over the gutters and under asphalt shingles. Went through 4 rolls of the stuff, it took forever to get it to lay flat over the gutters and under the shingles. If I pulled it a certain way to get it to lay flat, it would pull out in another area. Also, the material, being so flimsy, never really wanted to sit in the edge of the gutter, it just wanted to fall out of that "groove" at the edge of the gutter.
The material has been installed for about 2 months now, and its holding up okay, but I can see a couple spots where its fallen into the gutter slightly, and I''m just not looking forward to screwin'' with this stuff anytime soon!
Gonna try gutter covers next, as I am nowhere close to finishing the miles of damned gutters I have on my house and shop!!!

In, Miami, leaves fall of off trees in March/April just before the rainy season starts.
Tried several types of gutter guards, these sort of work. The big problem is that they dont fit well into 6" gutters .
I still got a mat of leaves on top of them that stayed on a a while, but at least the downspouts didnt get clogged

One thing the instructions dont tell you has that you should unwind the screen a day or two before using and let it sit in the sun under to flatten out a bit, otherwise they curl so much they are very hard to install.
Also, I tied the sections to each other and to the gutter brackets using plastic cable ties.
However I did cover about 75 ft of gutter for about $30 so this was cheap, lets see if it hold up

3 years ago I installed 20'' of some low cost gutter leaf-guard mesh. I waited to by more testing it out 1st.
While its a pain to get under the shingles it turns out that this gutter webbing works. I''m going to finish the back of the house where all the leafy trees are.
This same product is sold by many, some are sold with optional clips. I buy the package with the 10 clips and and extra roll you see here and use 5 clips per 20'', that gets me 40''. I have 40'' installed and need to do 30'' more to finish up.
Update; This job is done. After comparing all 3 brands from 3 different suppliers this gutter netting is the best, thicker material that should last longer. The other 2 brand are much thinner.
